Maximize a Small Interior Through Design
by Meghan McNamara
Making the most of small spaces in the case of Landmark Lane means bringing the outdoors in with a Nana Wall, using a central spiral stair, and organizing the puzzle behind the plaster.
At 1300 square feet of living space, it was imperative that we look at how both interior and exterior spaces layer upon each other to yield an expansive experience at #landmarklane. A large folding glass door allows a visual connection to the front deck and the ocean beyond and the generous roof overhang enables the living space to expand while still being protected from the elements. The design process calls upon our creativity and imagination, but also requires a clear vision of the client’s priorities. As architects, we protect those key elements that our clients communicate to us in the beginning and ensure that the ideas do not get lost along the way.
The interior spaces at #landmark lane pivot around a central spiral staircase. At each level the walls enclose a different portion of the cylinder, creating a playful relationship in how the spaces shift around this central point. As the volume takes shape, we discover new ways of seeing the form and delight in how the light plays across this surface.
An intricate puzzle lives behind the plaster, one that requires careful planning, a strong understanding of how the parts and pieces go together, and the ability to both anticipate the challenges as well as be creative when they appear unexpectedly. The walls do so much more than frame space – they hold the inner workings of the home. From allowing a pocket door to slip out of sight, to carrying the plumbing to a precise location, they are a place of careful collaboration between the trades.

Here you have an opportunity to put a large full-width image and add some explainer text that will float slightly above it in frame , which is nice when you want to show a detailed photo.
